Factors to Consider When Buying Wetsuit Gloves and Boots

Wetsuit gloves and boots are crucial gear for anyone looking to enjoy paddling in colder conditions. In addition to your wetsuit; gloves, and booties are just as important to keep your fingers and toes warm. (Click here to learn about considerations when purchasing a wetsuit for SUP). However, choosing the right wetsuit gloves and boots can be a bit tricky with so many options available. Let’s examine the important factors to consider when purchasing these essential items.

Thickness Matters:

One of the most critical aspects to consider is the thickness of the neoprene material used in wetsuit gloves and boots. Thickness is usually measured in millimeters (mm) for wetsuits and other wetsuit materials. Thicker gloves and boots offer better insulation and are ideal for colder waters, while thinner options are suitable for milder conditions. So, determine the water temperature where you'll be paddling, and choose the thickness accordingly. Below is a chart with recommendations.

Proper Fit:

Getting the right fit is vital for both comfort and performance. Ill-fitting gloves and boots can lead to discomfort, reduced flexibility, and even blisters. Ensure that the gloves and boots are snug without being too tight. It's a good idea to try them on if possible and consider brands or models known for their accurate sizing. This is where supporting your Paddling Shop comes in handy, you can try on the boots to ensure a quality fit. If you are in the Annapolis area, stop by East of Maui to try on a few different pairs.

Quality and Durability:

Investing in high-quality wetsuit gloves and boots is essential. Look for reputable brands and models with durable seams and materials. While quality products may be a bit more expensive, they will last longer and provide better performance, making them a cost-effective choice in the long run.

Grip and Traction:

Consider the grip and traction offered by the gloves and boots. This is especially important for paddlers who need to maintain control on slippery surfaces, look for boots with textured soles. If you are moving on and over rocks from your water access or portaging, having good traction and grip is important.

Budget:

Wetsuit gloves and boots come in a range of prices. While it's tempting to go for the most affordable options, remember that quality and durability should be prioritized. It's often worth spending a bit more to get gear that will last and perform well over time. Especially, if your safety is involved you may want to spend more on a well-known brand like NRS, Body Glove, or O'Neil.

Personal Opinion:

For the most part, paddling in Maryland, you would be okay with 3mm - 5mm booties and 2 mm gloves. I use a pair of the NRS Maverick gloves and a pair of the Seavenger Booties. The NRS Maverick gloves have been perfect for most days I go out on sunny but chilly days. Truthfully I need to upgrade my booties to something thicker and more form-fitting. I got the Seavengers booties because they were cheap and looked cool, but after a few paddling days in the cold, my feet got colder than I thought they would. I will upgrade this year, probably to a pair of the NRS booties or the BodyGlove Red Cell.

In summary, choosing the right wetsuit gloves and boots involves considering factors like thickness, fit, quality, grip, and budget. By carefully evaluating these aspects, you can ensure that your gear meets your specific needs and keeps you comfortable during your water adventures. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll be well-prepared to make an informed purchase that enhances your aquatic experiences.
