Paddling at Ft. Smallwood Park

Nestled on the edge of Anne Arundel County, Ft. Smallwood Park offers a fantastic spot for stand-up paddleboarders looking for a mix of natural beauty and accessible waters. Whether you're a beginner testing the waters or an intermediate paddler looking for a peaceful escape, this park has something for everyone.

Why Ft. Smallwood Park?

Ft. Smallwood Park is a hidden gem for paddlers thanks to its proximity to the Patapsco River and expansive views of the Chesapeake Bay. With calm, sheltered waters in certain areas, it’s ideal for beginners, especially if they stay in the Rock Creek area. This area still provides enough space for intermediate paddlers to explore, especially if they are looking for more open waters check out the Patapsco River that leads into the Chesapeake Bay.

Park Amenities

One of the standout features of Ft. Smallwood Park has excellent amenities. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Launch Facilities: The park provides a dedicated boat ramp, making it easy to launch your paddleboard. There is also a small beach launch area. Note that a small launch fee may apply, so check the park’s website for updated rates.

  • Parking: Ample parking is available close to the water, which is a huge plus when hauling a board.

  • Restrooms: Convenient restroom facilities are located near the launch area.

Potential Challenges

While Ft. Smallwood Park is a fantastic location, it’s essential to be prepared for a few challenges:

  • Wind: On breezier days, the open water leading toward the Chesapeake Bay can get choppy. Beginners should stick closer to the shoreline and head up Rock Creek to avoid strong gusts.

  • Tidal Changes: Check tide charts before heading out, as tidal shifts can impact your paddling experience. Low tide may expose muddy areas along the shoreline.

  • Current Patterns: In certain parts of the river, especially closer to the Bay, currents can be stronger than they appear. Be mindful of your energy level and paddle within your limits.
