Highlighting - Merritt Park

Nestled in Dundalk, Maryland, Merritt Park is a peaceful retreat for paddling enthusiasts. Merritt Park launches into calm waters along Bear Creek and easy-to-navigate waterways, it’s the perfect spot for both beginners testing their skills and intermediate paddlers looking for a relaxing day on the water.

Park Amenities

Merritt Park is well-equipped to make your paddling experience smooth and enjoyable. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Launch Access: The park features an easily accessible launch area, making it simple to get your gear in the water.  There are 2 launch spots, the Merritt Park Boat Ramp and the Merritt Park Kayak Ramp, both are in the same area and both will get you into the Bullneck Creek that will lead into Bear Creek.

  • Parking: Ample parking is available close to the water, reducing the hassle of carrying gear.

  • Restrooms: Restroom facilities are conveniently located near the main recreational areas.

  • Green Spaces: The park offers plenty of grassy areas and picnic spots, ideal for relaxing after your paddle.

Potential Challenges

While Merritt Park is a great location for paddling, here are a few challenges to be aware of:

  • Wind: Open sections of Bear Creek can become breezy, especially in the afternoon. Beginners may want to stick to more sheltered areas.

  • Boat Traffic: Bear Creek sees occasional boat traffic, so paddlers should remain vigilant and keep close to the shoreline when necessary.

  • Tidal Influences: Like many areas along Maryland’s waterways, tides can impact the depth and flow of water. Check local tide charts or apps before heading out.

Landmarks

As you paddle through Bear Creek, take in some of these notable sights:

  • Francis Scott Key Bridge:  If you are a little more adventurous, turn right out onto Bear Creek and head towards the Patapsco River.  Paddle out and see the new construction on the recently collapsed FSK Bridge, but stay safe out there.

  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for ospreys, herons, and other local bird species that frequent the area.

  • Shoreline Views: Enjoy the mix of wooded and residential shorelines that provide a unique perspective on this part of Dundalk.

Pre / Post / During Eats and Drinks

After a session on the water, consider checking out these nearby attractions:

  • Jimmy’s Famous Seafood: seen on shows like Diners, Dive-ins, and Dives; they are know for some of Maryland’s best crab cakes.

  • Hard Yacht Cafe: Paddle into the dock here and get an orange crush on your way back.

Merritt Park is a hidden gem for paddling, offering calm waters, convenient amenities, and a peaceful environment. Whether you’re a beginner learning the ropes or an intermediate paddler seeking a laid-back outing, this Dundalk destination is worth exploring.
