With its mostly, calm waters, stunning views of the monuments, and proximity to nature, this spot is ideal for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your paddling trip around Roosevelt Island.
Launch Spots Nearby
Paddling this part of the Potomac River has a few different launch spots and finding the right one for you is key to a successful paddling trip. Here are the most convenient options near Roosevelt Island, there are a few more if you are interested in paddling a little further, like the Washington Sailing Club or Gravely Point. But these below are the ones with the easiest access and solid launch sites:
Theodore Roosevelt Island Parking Lot (Virginia Side)
While the parking lot is primarily for hikers accessing the island, it’s close to the river. Though not an official launch site, you can find spots nearby to put your paddleboard or kayak into the water. Getting down to the water can be a little hazardous but there are a few spots that will work with some sure footing. Just be careful here. The parking area doess have a porto-potty.
Key Bridge Boathouse (D.C. Side)
Located upstream in Georgetown, this popular rental and launch spot makes it easy to access the Potomac. From here, you can paddle downstream to Roosevelt Island or upriver to the Three Sister Islands. There is a launch fee so check in with the desk or call ahead.
Thompson Boat House (D.C. side)
Situated just a few blocks from the Georgetown waterfront and next to Mile Maker 0 on the C&O Canal, Thompsons has a small parking lot easy ramp to the water. There probably is a fee to launch so check with the desk first.
Columbia Island Marina (Virginia Side)
Just downstream from Roosevelt Island, this marina offers an official launch area with parking and easy access to the water. Park near the non-motorized watercraft ramp and paddle left past the Pentegon and out to the Potomac River. Or paddle to the right from the dock and paddle along the boundary water and pop out just below Roosevelt Island. This way only works at high tide so make sure you check the tides. A full bathrooom and bar/restaurant are avaiilable here also. The Columbia Island Marina started charging a launch fee in summer of 2024.
