Maximizing the Lifespan of Your Wetsuit: Expert Tips for Storage and Care

As a person who spent a bunch of money on my wetsuit and other winter gear, I understand the importance of proper care and storage to extend the life of this essential gear. In these general guidelines, I'll share insights on how to maintain your wetsuit for optimal performance. From post-use rinsing to smart storage practices, these tips will not only preserve your investment but also enhance your overall paddling experience. Additionally, consider a parking lot changing mat to prevent dirt and debris from getting into your neoprene, this will prolong the life of the wetsuit.

Rinsing and Drying:

After each use, please take a moment to give your wetsuit the care it deserves. Rinse it thoroughly with fresh water to eliminate salt, sand, and debris that can compromise the integrity of the neoprene material. Following the rinse, hang your wetsuit in a shaded, well-ventilated area to dry completely. Opt for turning it inside out to expedite the drying process and ensure every corner is moisture-free.

Folding and Storage:

While folding is sometimes inevitable, do so sparingly and avoid creasing at stress-prone areas like the knees and elbows. Ideally, opt for hanging your wetsuit on a wide, padded hanger to preserve its shape, like this one from Ho Stevie on Amazon. Avoid thin wire hangers as they can create stress points on the neoprene. If you have booties and gloves often consider this hanger with bootie and glove holders.

Ideal Storage Conditions:

Choose a cool, dry storage space away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Excessive heat can accelerate neoprene deterioration, impacting your wetsuit's longevity. Whether you're storing it for the short term or an extended period, maintaining consistent environmental conditions is key.

Caution with Chemicals:

Keep your wetsuit away from petroleum-based products, solvents, and harsh chemicals. Exposure to such substances can accelerate neoprene degradation, impacting the overall durability and flexibility of your wetsuit.

Your wetsuit is more than just gear; it's an essential part of your winter paddling kit. By incorporating these tips into your care routine, you're not just extending its lifespan but enhancing your experience on the water. Invest the time and attention your wetsuit deserves, and it will continue to provide optimal performance for countless adventures to come.
