Highlighting - Black Hill Regional Park

This series will highlight local paddling locations to encourage people to check out new paddling spots all over Maryland. Today we highlight...

Black Hill Regional Park is located in Montgomery County Md just north of Germantown and only 10 minutes off of I-270. This protected lake is called Little Seneca Lake, but most people call it Black Hill Park. The park boasts over 2000 acres of wooded areas with hiking/biking trails, a nature center, a dog park, and boat rentals during the summer months. The lake is a damned body of water with over 500 acres to explore. The park does not allow gas-powered boat motors which means it is primarily paddlers and fisherpersons with battery-powered trolling motors.

Black Hill Lake is ideal for all paddler levels. Those who are new to SUP will find the mostly calm waters and close shorelines reassuring, those looking to paddle a few miles will be able to go for well over 7 miles if they circumvent around the outside of the lake, and those who paddle with kids/dogs or groups will find plenty to look at with all the wildlife. Many kinds of animals call this lake home; blue herons, turtles, bass, eagles, geese, and much more.

Follow the signs to park your car at the Boat Ramp area for the best water access, plenty of parking, and a porta-potty. The water is directly next to the parking lot. You may also park near the Nature Center or the Boat Rental area. The walk to the water is longer and the put-in spot is not as easy as the boat ramp but it still can be done. There is a $5 day-use fee per vessel, which is accessible online before arrival. Another option is to scan the QR code in the boat ramp parking lot. Those who paddle there often should look into the season pass to support the park so they can continue to keep the lake open for recreational use.

This lake is a great place to learn to paddle and get comfortable with your paddling stroke and paddle with friends. There are lots of Meet Ups here throughout the summer months.
