Located just outside the Washington, DC line in Prince George's County on the Anacostia River sits the Bladensburg Waterfront. A local and newly revitalized paddling location that will hopefully be a great place to paddle for years to come.

In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the Bladensburg waterfront and reconnect the town to its historic riverfront roots. The Bladensburg Waterfront Park, situated along the Anacostia River, provides recreational amenities such as walking and biking trails, picnic areas, and access to the water for SUP, kayaking, and canoeing. The park also hosts events and festivals that celebrate the town's history and cultural heritage.

The Bladensburg waterfront area continues to undergo redevelopment and revitalization efforts, aimed at preserving its historical significance, enhancing its natural beauty, and creating a vibrant community space. These efforts seek to highlight the town's connection to the Anacostia River and restore its status as a waterfront destination.

A generous amount of parking is available, including an overflow section designated explicitly for weekends. If you find yourself in the overflow area, it is advisable to drop off your board and gear at the dock before parking. Adjacent to the boat dock area, you'll find a restroom facility and a myriad of sculptures that have been added as part of ongoing revitalization efforts. Moreover, this location serves as a practice hub for local crew and rowing teams, such as Catholic University with its distinctive coach boats, as well as nearby high schools like Walter Johnson.

The dock area is impeccably maintained by the Park Service, offering boat rentals and featuring a specially designed kayak launch dock for individuals with disabilities. The docks are extremely SUP-friendly and accessing the water is a breeze.

The Anacostia River, a charming local waterway, maintains a straight path in this area before gently winding its way southward, eventually meeting the Potomac River just south of Washington DC. Despite its picturesque nature, it is regrettable to note the presence of accumulated trash in this river. I dedicated an afternoon to collecting trash, yet it became evident that much more effort is required to make a substantial impact. Additionally, it has been noted by park staff that swimming is not recommended based on the cleanliness of the water.

This area is a great area to paddle especially if it is your local and closest waterway.
