Highlighting - Downs Park North Launch

Downs Park North Kayak Launch

map of location of Downs Park Kayak Launch

Nestled north of Annapolis and just north of Gibson Island is a small 236-acre park on the Chesapeake Bay that boasts a picnic area, playground, dog beach, public beach access, and a kayak/canoe launch spot that leads into Bodkin Creek and ultimately into the Chesapeake Bay.

Downs Park North Kayak launch is a fairly unused location at the end of Wharf Creek. Once you paddle out of Wharf Creek, you can connect with Main Creek or Back Creek if you want to get some miles in a fairly protected area. These waterways also connect to the Chesapeake if you want to see the view or you love to paddle in open water.

To access the North Kayak Launch you will need to visit the Ranger station as you enter the park and pay the day-use fee (annual passes are available if you feel you will visit often), the ranger will then direct you to drive directly across the street and they will open up the gate for you on the other side of the road. Follow the road till the end and you will see signs for Kayak/Canoe Launch. Even though the name does not say SUP, you can launch a SUP from there. This location offers plenty of parking and a pot-o-potty in the parking lot. There is a short walk of about 100 yards or less from the parking lot to the launch point, so be prepared to take a stroll with your gear.

Once in the water, enjoy the calm paddling past the waterfront homes as you meander around another amazing tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The biggest concern on these back waterways is staying out of the way of the fishermen who often use these waterways in the mornings to catch crab and other Chesapeake bounty.

This location is a great little spot that often has little traffic but still has stellar paddling opportunities.
