Potomac River from Dargan Bend Boat Ramp

If you're looking for a fantastic spot to launch your paddle adventure on the Potomac River, the Dargan Bend Boat Ramp in Maryland is a must-visit. Nestled within the scenic C&O Canal National Historical Park, this boat ramp provides easy access to the Potomac's tranquil waters. Whether you're paddleboarding or kayaking, you'll find the launch area well-maintained and convenient. The views here are simply stunning, with the river winding through lush landscapes that offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There is plenty of parking so you won't have to worry about finding a spot for your vehicle and trailer. There is a park maintained bathroom in the parking lot.

The boat ramp is only a short walk from the parking lot.  When paddling this section of the Potomac River it is important to read the current and from this launch you should paddle upstream

  • Paddling downstream will cause you to get into some uncomfortable rapids and moving water.

  • Paddle upstream for a little more than a mile and you will come across your only small hazard, there is a sectin of shallow rocks that cause small rapids. You will need to portage this section.

  • Stay to the right of the rocks and walk your boat/board through the shallow water.

  • Once on the other side the river opens up with a few more miles of flat relaxing paddling.

  • Remember where the portage section is so you can do the same in reverse on your way back.

During the weekends these areas will have a lot of recreational power boats and jet skis so be cautious of other boaters and of boat wake. If you go on a weekeday the wildlife in this section of the Potomac River is amazing.  There are plenty of fish, birds, bald eagles, herons, turtles, and much more to see while paddling.

The area around Dargan Bend is also a paradise for anglers, offering excellent fishing opportunities right from your boat or the shore. The Potomac River is home to various fish species, making it a great spot to cast a line and relax. If you're not into fishing, the nearby C&O Canal towpath is perfect for a leisurely hike or bike ride, providing a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area.

Just remember to check the river conditions before you go, especially after heavy rains, and ensure you have any necessary permits for fishing and boating. Use these apps to make ure the river is safe enough to paddle.  Safety first: wear your life jacket and enjoy the serene paddling experience that Dargan Bend has to offer.
